Abstract:

Chronic stress exposure increases vulnerability to both metabolic and psychiatric disorders. The overarching hypothesis of my research program is that ghrelin, a peptide hormone produced by the stomach and one that stimulates feeding and increases adiposity, is secreted as part of the physiological stress response to meet the energetic demands posed by acute and chronic stressors. Furthermore, deficits in ghrelin signaling result in increased vulnerability to stress induced pathology. The aims of my research program are to evaluate the contributions of ghrelin receptors on different cell groups within the brain to the metabolic and emotional consequences of chronic stress
